Press Release: MURIC URGES NIGERIANS TO PRAY FOR GANI FAWEHINMI 26th April, 2008
Chief Gani Fawehinmi marked his 70th birthday anniversary a few days ago. The legal luminary and foremost human rights crusader however lies critically ill in a London hospital where he has been receiving treatment for cancer for some weeks.
There is no gainsaying the fact that Gani has sacrificed a lot for Nigeria. He fought the military to a standstill. His steadfastness in seeking justice and fair play is unrivalled. Gani stands on the same pedestal as the renowned Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa and perhaps higher. His love for the jamaheer (masses) knows no bounds. Gani has defended the Allah-Given and fundamental human rights of the underpriviledged without demanding fees. A completely detribalised Nigerian and a moderate Muslim, Gani is also known to have offered scholarships to indigent students.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) appeals to all religious groups to offer special prayers for Gani’s recovery and divine relief from the pains of his illness. We call on Imams to use Friday 9th May 2008 to offer special prayers for Gani Fawehinmi and his family. Churches are urged to pray for him on Sunday 11th May 2008.
Meanwhile MURIC commends the courage of the immediate family of Chief Gani Fawehinmi. We assure the Fawehinmi family of our solidarity at all times.
