Press Release: MURIC COMMENDS POSITIVE STEPS TAKEN BY YAR’ADUA 26th January 2008

The support recently given by President Umaru Yar’adua to the removal of the immunity clause from the Nigerian constitution is a welcome development. Immunity clause has been abused by past leaders who used it as a shield against prosecution after siphoning billions of naira outside the country. It has also turned the Nigerian constitution as a whole into a worthless volume invoked by rogues who occupy the government house only to criminalise the system and to institutionalise violence.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) salutes Mr. President for this bold step. We urge him to pursue this goal religiously until the immunity clause is thrown inside the dustbin of history where it should belong. We charge our lawmakers to align themselves on the positive side of history by ensuring that the immunity clause is expunged from our lawbooks.

MURIC equally lauds Yar’adua’s return of the sum of N1bn into the treasury. We note with immense pleasure that the president’s action immediately became a yardstick as some ministries and agencies began the refund of substantial amounts into government coffers. This is a great departure from Nigeria’s former culture of waste. The fact that Yar’adua disowned ‘special accounts’ also symptomises the president’s unflinching commitment to the golden principle of probity and accountability.

We urge the president to continue on this path. MURIC has no doubt that it is the path capable of leading Nigeria through its perpetually dark tunnel to glowing light. MURIC charges all those who are in leadership positions, including ministers, governors, lawmakers and local government chairmen, to take the cue from President Yar’adua in order to collectively take Nigeria to el dorado.
