Press Release: PROBE FEMALE PRISONERS’ PREGNANCIES 22nd January 2008

The nation learnt recently that many female prisoners have become pregnant while serving jail terms. This has resulted in the phenomenon of homeless children roaming the premises of prison yards and prison neighbourhood.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) finds this disgusting. How did women serving prison terms become pregnant? It is assumed, ceteris paribus, that the married ones among them cannot and should not be allowed to go home to meet their husbands. They only mix freely with fellow female prisoners.

This development raises more questions than it can answer. Who is responsible for their pregnancies? Who will be responsible for the innocent kids? How secure are our prisons? Etc.

MURIC demands an investigation of the female prisoners’ pregnancy. The Ministry of Internal Affairs must probe this ugly development to nip it in the bud before too much harm is done.
