Press Release: LAGOS PILGRIMS’ PROTEST: FLIMSY EXCUSE 3rd January, 2008
Pilgrims from Lagos State reportedly went on protest in Saudi Arabia against the decision of the officials to allow them to spend only two days in Madinah instead of one week.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) observes that the rationale for embarking on this protest is not good enough. Dialogue should have been the path to follow. Staying at Madina is not one of the mandatory rites of hajj and the board officials might have been constrained to take this decision for logistic reasons and in the overall interest of the pilgrims. This protest may have a political undertone.
MURIC is aware of the laudable efforts and sacrifices of the Lagos State Government aimed at ensuring comfort for Lagos pilgrims and we salute the Lagos authorities for this.
We suggest, however, that the Lagos State Government looks into the allegation of ill-treatment of Lagos pilgrims by the officials. MURIC appeals to both the pilgrims and their families back in Nigeria to exercise patience. Protesting in a foreign land particularly during pilgrimage to Makkah tarnishes Nigeria’s image. Pilgrims or members of their families who have tangible proof of any type of maltreatment are advised to submit such to MURIC at our head office in Iba Estate.
