Press Release: BHUTTO'S ASSASSINATION: HARAM 28th December, 2007
The world was rattled yesterday with news of the killing of Pakistan's leading opposition figure, Benazir Bhutto, after addressing a rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
Although it is still too early to point accusing finger at any individual or group, it is clear enough that her killers were determined to eliminate her from the presidential race in her country.
We hold President Musharraf responsible at this initial stage not necessarily for plotting her killing but because security around the late Bhutto had been porous as the government of Pakistan did nothing despite reports of death threats issued by different groups within the country.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) finds this assassination appalling, brutal and barbaric. Islam lays out well-defined rules concerning warfare. In particular Islam forbids the slaying of women and children. Benezir Bhutto has been a lover of peace and a patriot all along. MURIC therefore strongly condemns her killing. It is a flagrant assault on the humane culture of Islam.
We console the citizens of Pakistan. We advise President Musharraf to shelve any ambition to prolong his totalitarian rule over Pakistan. Instead, we advise him to speed up the process of reform and democratization. We appeal to all aggrieved individuals and groups in Pakistan to sheath their swords and give dialogue a chance.
Finally, we assert our belief that justice is the soul of peace. Whereas official and institutional confrontations may reduce the efficacy of terrorism and its threat to world peace, only justice and fairplay can defeat it. We therefore charge the United Nations (UN) to set in motion such machinery necessary for the restoration of peace based on justice, not only in Pakistan but in all troubled parts of the world. The UN must put itself in a position where it becomes empowered to turn justice into a lethal weapon to combat and totally eliminate terrorism and all other forms of violence in the world.
