Press Release: YARADUA’S PUBLIC DECLARATION OF ASSETS: MINISTERS ET AL MUST FOLLOW SUIT 4th July 2007
President Umaru Musa Yaradua’s public declaration of his assets is highly commendable. This is the first time any Nigerian leader will do so on the pages of newspapers and via other public channels.
We of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) call on the National Assembly to amend the constitution in such a way as to compel all future presidents, ministers and other public office holders to publicly declare their assets both before and after their departure from office. This is the only way corruption can be effectively kept in check in Nigeria.
We regard Yaradua’s gesture as a good sign of a new dawn in transparency in governance. We therefore charge all Nigerians to begin a reassessment of the polity, to be less cynical and to entertain a new hope of a brighter future for the country. If Yaradua does not waver in this transparent propensity, MURIC foresees light at the end of the tunnel in the very near future.
