Press Release: SATANIC NAIRA! 10th March 2007

The Central Bank issued new naira notes recently. A major feature of the new notes is the removal of Arabic from them. We of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) join other Islamic organizations who have rejected this measure.

We are surprised that the Obasanjo administration can contemplate such a dastardly crime against the Muslims of this country in spite of all our sacrifices in the interest of peace and unity. Government has no excuse whatsoever for what it has done. It is a miscalculation particularly for a government whose days in office are less than one hundred. What is this step designed to achieve except to implement a Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) agenda?

We are not unaware that members of CAN had been complaining about Arabic on the naira since a very long time. Obasanjo has simply executed a script written by CAN. But he made a gross miscalculation by failing to seek the opinion of the Muslims. What is wrong if Arabic is on the naira? Is English not there? The Arabic on the naira symbolizes the existence of Muslims in the country while the English on the naira represents the Christian population. To remove the Arabic unceremoniously is to tell the Muslims that they do not belong, that this country belongs to Christians. There is no doubt that this is a slap in the face of the Ummah. It will widen the cleavage between Muslims and Christians for a long time to come.

We ask why Christians must always get what they want. We ask why Muslims must play second fiddle to their fellow Nigerians. We demand that Obasanjo withdraws his Satanic naira. There will be no negotiations.

We however reaffirm our commitment to peaceful conduct. There will be no violent reactions. There are other civilized means of expressing opposition without bringing hardship upon the people. Such measures will be explored at the appropriate time if government fails to withdraw its Satanic naira. We will keep our fingers crossed until then.
