Press Release: MURIC DENOUNCES PLANNED RETRENCHMENT 18th July, 2006

The Federal government of Nigeria recently announced its plan to retrench about 33,000 workers in the federal civil service. Coming at a time when prices of goods and services are sky-rocketing while the nation’s  infrastructure is still begging for attention, the plan is ill-conceived, wicked and counterproductive.

A country in which crime rate is still very high, where battalions of unemployed graduates roam the streets and corruption is at its peak should not embark on this type of exercise. To sack such a large number of overworked, underpaid and overtaxed workers will make a mockery of the Federal Government’s war against corruption. This is so because the affected workers and others too are likely to start cutting edges in order to gain from the bends what they lost on the straights.

That is why so many of the armed robbers in the country are university graduates and people of other well trained professionals who have been rendered idle by successive government’s myopic and visionless policies. We warn the Federal Government not to unleash thirty-three thousand (33,000) armed robbers on unprotected Nigerians.

Governance is all about the people’s welfare. Relieving people of their jobs for no just reason is most unpatriotic and a calculated departure from all known welfare measures. MURIC calls on the Federal Government not to use this sadistic measure to cause confusion in the country. We condemn the confusionist strategy of sacking 33,000 workers with one hand and increasing workers wages with the other. This stands in sharp contrast with the humanistic concept of “the greatest happiness for the greatest number”.

MURIC appeals to the Federal Government to shelve the proposed sack now in the interest of peace and security in the country.
