Press Release: MURIC LAUDS DARIYE’S IMPEACHMENT:CALLS FOR HIS REPARTRIATION 14th November 2006
Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State was impeached yesterday 13th November 2006 after a protracted struggle between himself and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) recalls the former governor’s arrest in London over money laundering charges and his subsequent bail-jumping and escape to Nigeria. Dariye’s crime in London painted Nigeria black and smeared the image of every Nigerian citizen resident in or travelling to Britain or any other foreign country for that matter. Dariye’s alleged involvement in corrupt enrichment back home and his resistance of the EFCC also portrays him as a die-hard kleptomaniac and a rogue in executive garb.
MURIC welcomes Dariye’s ouster. Dariye’s cup of criminality has long been overfilled. The lawmakers of Plateau State who procrastinated over his impeachment should bury their heads in shame for failing the people who elected them into the Assembly. Dariye should have been removed immediately he surfaced in Nigeria after jumping bail in London. That was the best way to show the world that Nigerians are not all criminals and that we will not aid and abet crime. MURIC regards all methods used so far to get rid of Dariye are fair in view of the fact that the man is hardened and unrepentant. Nigerians must never again allow criminals to sit in power.
Finally we call on the Federal Government to ensure that the former governor is repatriated to London where he jumped bail after which he can be tried for corruption.
